The Red Pony
JOHN STEINBECK
THE RED PONY by john steinbeck (fiction) slim collection of four stories about a boy coming to terms with the brutality of nature, bitter disappointments, and navigating relationships with the father figures in his life + maybe because i’m a mom to two former little boys, now mostly grown, but every poignant lesson young jody has to learn put such a lump in my throat + every word is purposeful, every description is vivid, each simple story conveys deep truth =👍🏻❤️

“A red pony colt was looking at him out of the stall. Its tense ears were forward and a light of disobedience was in its eyes. Its coat was rough and thick as an Airedale‘s fur and its mane was long and tangled. Jody‘s throat collapsed in on itself and cut his breath short...Jody couldn’t bear to look at the pony’s eyes any more. He gazed down at his hands for a moment, and he asked very shyly, ‘Mine?’”
